Product  Note:

The visible darker areas at the edges and bottom of this pouch are natural and perfectly normal. We specifically utilize transparent packaging to showcase the lacquer's raw, authentic appearance. This shading occurs because the high-purity urushiol instantly oxidized upon contact with the air during sealing, which stands as direct evidence of its premium quality and high enzymatic activity.

How to Choose the Right Urushi for Yourself

**For Kintsugi: We recommend Grade No.4 to Grade No.1 .

  **For Lacquerware:

**Grade No.1 - No.3: Suitable for base coat, middle coat, and topcoat.

**Grade No.4 - No.5: Suitable for base coat and middle coat.

**Grade No.6 - No.7: Suitable for base coat.

**For Beginners: If you are unsure which grade to choose, we recommend starting with Grade No.3.

Basic Principles

  1. Choose urushi that fits your usage habits instead of blindly buying the most expensive or highest-grade ones.
  2. Never make bulk purchases on your first order. I have listed four grades of 100g samples in different grades. You can test them first and place bulk orders once you find your ideal match.

Reasons

  1. The quality of raw urushi is mainly determined by its urushiol content. Higher urushiol content brings better drying performance, hardness and other properties.
  2. Traditional craft experience shows that urushi used from the base coat to the top coat should be gradually upgraded in quality, and the same rule applies to kintsugi work.
    .......

Common Factors Affecting the Final Effect

  1. Temperature and humidity: The performance of urushi varies greatly between summer and winter.
  2. Base material: Urushi shows different results when applied on different substrates.
  3. Personal craftsmanship: Some craftsmen apply 5 coats while others prefer 10 coats, leading to distinct finished effects.
  4. Drying time: Different curing periods also change the final presentation.
    ......

Practical Experience

Many seasoned craftsmen can finish exquisite kintsugi and lacquerware works perfectly with normal urushi. There is no necessity to use top-tier high-quality urushi for all lacquer and kintsugi art projects, as many crafts have relatively low requirements for urushi grade.

In short, suitability always outweighs premium quality and high price.

Wish you find your most suitable raw urushi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why does raw urushi change color or darken over time?
A: Raw urushi contains active laccase enzymes and urushiol, which naturally react with atmospheric oxygen. Oxidation causes the lacquer to darken slightly—a clear indicator of genuine, high-potency natural sap with zero chemical preservatives.

Q: Which grade of raw urushi should I buy for Kintsugi repair?
A: For structural bonding (joining broken shards with Mugi-Urushi) or gap filling (Sabi-Urushi), choose our High-Urushiol Ki-Urushi for maximum tensile strength and durability.

Q: Is pure natural urushi safe to use on eating utensils once cured?
A: Yes. Fully cured urushi forms a bio-polymer surface that is 100% non-toxic, food-safe, alcohol-resistant, and heat-resistant.
